The court case has been going on since April 2011, back when Christian Louboutin decided to sue YSL for using red soles on the bottom of its monochromatic pumps. Louboutin sued for $1 million worth of damages, claiming that by YSL using red soles on the bottom of their heels they were causing confusion and deception among purchasers. Because Louboutin was granted a trademark back in 2008 giving the brand exclusive rights to make red-soled shoes for women, the federal court chose to reject the earlier ruling, stating that Christian Louboutin is in fact entitled to its trademark on red soles, with the exception of when the shoe is entirely red, according to Women's Wear Daily.
