Is new FDA-approved anti-obesity pill really the safest way to lose weight?

There's some good news for those of us who have a hard time losing weight: the Federal Drug Administration has just approved a new weight loss pill called Qsymia, manufactured by Vivus, Inc. The most surprising detail about this drug, though, is that many doctors seem to be thrilled about the results, claiming that this pill is the "most effective therapy in a new generation of anti-obesity pills designed to help patients safely shed pounds." The question is, is it ACTUALLY a good idea for you?

I find it really interesting that doctors are claiming this magic little pill is the "most effective therapy" for people to "safely shed pounds." Now, I'm one of those people who has literally tried EVERYTHING when it came to weight loss: fen-phen based pills that made me feel like crap, "for women only" weight loss pills that jacked up my blood pressure thanks to a LOT of caffeine and Alli—the first weight loss pill approved by the FDA.

Besides pills, though, I've also been a Weight Watchers member since I was 18 and, after a long struggle of up-and-down weight loss, finally settled on a gastric bypass. I know that there's no easy answer when it comes to weight loss. I think that everyone is different and must do what is right for THEIR body—but I will say this to those doctors: the SAFEST way to lose the weight has and always will be to simply eat healthier foods and get moving more.

I honestly don't care what the doctors say or what the FDA approves. Yes, this pill may actually be a good idea for some patients—but I really resent them hailing it as a cure for the obesity problem. We as a nation got fat by eating processed junk and the only solution to this problem is to stop eating that food.

Now, I'm not perfect. I like to indulge sometimes, too. And I certainly have days where I eat a LOT of food that is not so great for me, but I always make sure to balance that with a mostly healthy diet. Maybe this tiny little pill will help some people lose weight, but, let's face it, they won't be keeping it off without a serious change to their diets.
