I love apples. No, seriously, I really, really love apples. I eat one (or more) pretty much every single day and, although I know that they're one of the top fruits that we have to buy organic because of possible pesticide contamination, they're still my favorite go-to mid-morning snack. The one thing I never liked about apples, though, is that they can turn brown pretty fast after biting. Now a Canadian company has come up with a genetically modified apple that actually DOESN'T brown. But is it safe for your family?

The company, Okanagan Specialty Fruits has come up with the arctic apple that "carries a synthetic gene that reduces the production of polyphenol oxidase, the enzyme that causes the fruit to brown." Okay, well, I can understand where they were going with this—but messing with the fruit genetically seems like a pretty creepy move on their part.
I'm pretty suspect of any fruit or vegetable that's been genetically modified to become supposedly better. I mean, honestly, what's the point of making an apple that doesn't brown? Is becoming brown really so big of a deal that we have to alter the natural healthiness of something that came from nature?

At the very least, I'm kind of glad that the U.S. apple industry is responding in the same way as I am, angry at this company because their little genetic trick might "undermine the fruit's image as a healthy and natural food." It's definitely NOT natural to do this to a poor, unsuspecting apple. I'm not really happy about it either and I'm hoping that this idea won't spread cause, really, who needs a weird non-browning apple?
