5 Fun activities with the kids when cable isn’t working

I've never been so glad to not have cable anymore than I was this morning, when I read that DirectTV and Viacom are in SUCH a huge disagreement over god-knows-what right now that the cable giant has currently lost access to the media company for 20 million customers.

This includes channels like Comedy Central, MTV and Nickelodeon—which every parent will know as "the channel that Sponge Bob lives on." Well, if you're one of the affected people (and even if you're not), there ARE a few things you can do with the kids that doesn't include the big black box in the living room. Here are some fun activities for the whole family, sans cable TV.

One of my favorite things, when I was younger, was going to the park with my parents. I loved to have them push me on the swings and I would often repay the favor. Even now, whenever I see a swingset, I think of those special times with my folks.

Now, maybe it's because I love cooking, but I think having a fun cooking session with the kids is one of the best things you can do. You can have them help you with dinner or learn how to make a new dessert together–and enjoy the rewards in the end!

Take Your Kids to Play Soccer

I know you love fútbol or, at least, probably remember playing it as a kid. Honestly, ANY sport with your kid would be a much more fun way to spend the afternoon–be it by kicking a ball around, throwing a ball (American football) or hitting one with a bat.

Teach Your Kids How to Make Crafts

Honestly, one of the things that I loved most about days when the TV wasn't an option was just sitting at home at the big table and drawing or crafting. Make a collage with photos, decorate a flower basket, cut out fun shapes just because–there's millions of projects to find online and any one of them can be fun for all.

Watch Never-ending Netflix Movies

Well, if you can't join them… beat them! Just because your cable is out of commission, doesn't mean that you can't enjoy SOME movies. I love my Netflix these days and use it to watch some of my favorites–including classic cartoon movies.
