I know show and tell is a staple in preschool and kindergarten, but I've never really liked it because my daughter and I would always forget and we had to scramble at the last minute to get whatever we found before flying out the door on our way to school. I wonder if that's what happened to the 5-year-old kindergartner who took out 50 packets of heroin when it came time for show and tell in his Connecticut school earlier this week.
All kidding aside, how in the world does something like this even happen?
Well, apparently the heroin belonged to the boy's stepfather and it was in his jacket, which the boy took to school on Monday. Immediately after he showed the packets to his classmates, his teacher grabbed them and notified the principal who called police.
But that's not all, when el sinvergüenza del stepfather, Santos Roman, noticed his heroin was missing, he went to the school and began frantically looking for his stepson. When he spotted his jacket in an empty classroom he took it and ran out of the school. Little did he know that the drugs were gone and police officers were right there ready to take him into custody. ¡Bien hecho!
Roman has been charged with risk of injury to a minor, possession of narcotics, sale of narcotics and possession of narcotics within 1,500 feet of a school. I'm assuming this is nothing new to this man who already has an extensive record of drug convictions. His stepson has been turned over to the custody of the state Department of Children and Families until other family can be located.
Stories like this one break my heart. I don't even want to imagine what the life of a 5-year-old–my daughter's age–is like with a stepdad like that. And, where was the mother in all this?
