Extreme parenting fail: Banning Ice cream trucks at the park

It's been unseasonably warm here in Denver and like clock work one of the typical things signifying spring is here has already started to happen: the ice cream truck. We've heard the unmistakable melodic chimes coming out of its speakers in more than one occasion, and Vanessa immediately asks if we can get some ice cream.

I haven't said yes yet, but that's because I usually don't have any change–and I doubt he takes credit cards–or I'm in the middle of something and I can't take an ice cream break at the moment. But NOT because I think there's anything wrong with her having a popsicle, like some parents in an upscale part of Brooklyn who want to ban ice cream trucks from the park. Are they for real?

"Along with the first truly beautiful day of the year, my son and I had our first ruined day at the playground," a poster named Sarah said recently on a Park Slope Parents online group. "Two different people came into the actual playground with ice cream/Italian ice push carts. I was able to avoid it for a little while but eventually I left with a crying 4-year-old."

What is happening to the world? Don't get me wrong, I'm totally aware that we have a serious children obesity problem in this country, but just make sure your children are getting a balanced diet and enough exercise and leave the ice cream truck alone.

Or, maybe, just teach your child that no is no and then learn to deal with the consequences. I just don't understand how anybody would even fathom banning an ice cream truck from a park. What is going to happen to the children of these parents when they go out in the real world and mommy is not there to protect them from all evil? Another example of an extreme parenting fail!

What do you think?
