The 6 craziest birthing stories EVER!

Delivering a baby can induce fear in anyone. There's the build-up of anxiety and anticipation after 9 months, the rush to the hospital, the contractions, and of course, the actual birth. But what happens when you can't make it the hospital in time? Alayna Robbins and her husband, Mike Robbins, found out last week when the fifth time mom's water broke early and she was forced to give birth on the side of a Phoenix highway.

The couple was headed to the hospital when they realized the baby was coming sooner than they thought.  After calling 911, the dispatcher told Robbins not to push, which she (obviously!) did not appreciate.  "Don't tell me not to push cause I'm gonna push," she told ABC15.

The two had no choice but to deliver the baby boy. Fire crews and paramedics arrived shortly after and took the family to a nearby hospital. "We're all doing great," Robbins said.

It's so great that both baby and mom are OK, but how terrifying is this story? And the Robbins family is just the latest in a long history of weird births. Here are a few other crazy places women have given birth:

  1. Two days before Robbins' incident (why was last week so eventful in the birthing world?!), Elissa Simonson gave birth right outside a Minnesota hospital. Her husband ran in to get help but by the time he was back with the doctor, Elissa had already given birth behind a nearby bench. She and the newborn were rushed inside afterwards.
  2. Last month, 10-year-old Latina, Stephanie Zamora, helped deliver her mother's baby after she went into early labor while on the way to the hospital. She also helped translate the EMT's instructions to her parents while they waited for an ambulance!
  3. In September, Aida Alamillo was on a flight from Manila to San Francisco when she went into pre-term labor at 35 weeks. Three nurses on board and cabin crew members had to help her give birth on the plane! The boy was named Kevin Raymar Francis Domingo, with "Francis" being a nod to the fact that he was born en route to San Francisco.
  4. Last October,  performance artist, Marni Kotak, said that giving "birth" is the higest form of art and delivered a baby inside a New York City art gallery. 19 to 20 people were present for the delivery, which took place in a birthing pool.
  5. That same month, Ottawa mom Nancy Salgueiro gave birth live over the Internet, with more than 2000 people registered to watch.  Her two-year-old son cut his new brother's umbilical cord.
