A gorgeous Jessica Alba and her equally beautiful girls grace the cover of April's Parenting magazine. In the story accompanying the fun photo shoot, Jessica talks about her parenting practices, including the fact that her producer husband, Warren Cash, is a softy in terms of scolding the girls while she is "the disciplinarian."
Why doesn't that surprise me? Although she told the magazine that it's because she was a naughty child herself and knows all about "how to cut off bad behavior and redirect it," I'm pretty sure it also has to do with her Latina heritage. After all, it's a well known fact that Latina moms tend to be the disciplinarians.
I known my mom was. I'm pretty sure it had a lot to do with the fact that my dad spent most of his waking time at work. Although, even on weekends when we were all home, my mom was always the one dishing out the discipline. Whenever I think back on those times, I clearly remember being mostly punished by my mom.
In my own household, I'd say things are pretty mixed with both my husband and I sharing in the disciplining–although my husband would probably disagree. I'm pretty strict with my kids, but he has told me in more than one ocassion that I'm not strong enough because I give in way too easily. My answer to that is that you have to learn to pick your fights.
Either way, I'm glad I don't have to do the disciplining alone because I remeber that as a child when I would get mad at my mom for whatever scolding or punishment she'd unleash upon me, I always use to think that my dad was so much nicer than her. I don't want my kids to feel that way. If they're going to hate us, they better hate us both equally!
Who's the disciplinarian in your home?
