A condition called acute flaccid myelitis, and also known as AFM, has been affecting many children across the country. United States health officials revealed on Monday, December 10, that there have been a record number of cases of the mysterious paralyzing illness affecting children this year. So far, almost all of the patients are under the age of 18.

The rare disease, which has similar symptoms as polio, is still being investigated and has no cure since cases of children being affected by it first began to surface in 2014. An AFM Task Force of 16 experts was established by the CDC in November to help find a cure for the illness, which reportedly took a life last year. No deaths have been reported this year, but it seems like the virus gets stronger as time goes by.
