Curly Qs: How can I freshen up my curls?

Curly Q: I LOVE the way my curls look right after they've been washed and styled. The problem is maintaining that frizz-free bouncy look between washes or even throughout the day. By the time I leave my job my rizos are a big frizzy mess. Help!

Chica, believe me, I hear ya! Maintaining curls throughout the day (and especially between washes) can be a challenge. Fancy gels and mousse formulas might do the trick right after a fresh wash, but all it does is cause sticky product buildup on dry curls. The trick to revitalizing curls whether the next morning, or just a few hours after, is to look for methods that are going to smooth away frizz, soften curls, and create definition. Luckily, there are quite a few quick solutions to this curly hair problem. Check them out!

Invest in a spray bottle: Want to freshen up those curls? Invest in a travel-sized spray bottle. Sometimes all you need is a few spritz of water to help revitalize curly hair. Carry one in your purse to touch up at work.

Make Leave-In conditioner your BFF: To avoid crunchy curls and product buildup, I retouch my hair by scrunching in a deeply hydrating leave-in conditioner, like Ouidad Moisture Lock ($23). This light-weight treatment smoothes away frizz and leaves hair soft and silky for hours!

Try a curl defining cream: If my curls need more definition and bounce, I apply a curl cream, like SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Enhancing Smoothie ($11). It works every time.

Do the pineapple: Another trick for maintaining second-day curls is gathering all your hair in a scrunchie on the top of your head at night, also known as "The Pineapple." It's like a super high ponytail only you don't actually tie the scrunchie, you keep it lose. It prevents your curls from flattening or frizzing up while you sleep.
